Hello! I’m Lulu and for the last 3 months I’ve had the joy of helping out 2 times weekly at Goldra. Back in October I quit my job and life in the U.S. to travel around the world (with no real plan). I spent 7 months in Southeast Asia and headed to Europe in May. My original plan was to work for a workspace/AirBNB in Faro, but this fell through before I boarded the flight out of Vietnam. To be honest, I had never heard of Faro before this opportunity came up, but I knew that I would want to find a great place to volunteer with animals while here. Through the Facebook Group, Anything Animal Algarve, I found Goldra!
Jan & Ray have been wonderful to work with. There is structure and order in the responsibilities that need to take place each day, with room to play. My responsibilities varied from walking the dogs, cleaning cages, bathing & grooming, and my favorite: loving the dogs. Being able to come here 2 times each week really helped me to feel like I was part of a community (in a place where I had known no one), and gave me the chance to give back a little. And the contagious excitement of the dogs can brighten up your entire day.
There are so many young and senior dogs here that would be perfect additions to homes all over Europe. I specifically want to take IceBear and Vera with me, although they won’t fit in my 50L bag when I leave next week!
Coming to volunteer here has been the perfect choice for me as a traveler and dog lover.
